How to Split a PDF

  1. Upload your PDF. Drag it in or click to browse. Files up to 100MB.
  2. Choose how to split it. Enter custom page ranges, set a fixed number of pages per file, or split into one file per page.
  3. Click Split. Smaller files are processed right in your browser; larger files are processed on our server.
  4. Download your files. You'll get a ZIP containing every resulting PDF, ready to unzip.

Choosing How to Split Your File

Custom Page Ranges

Enter the exact pages you want in each output file — pages 1–3 in one file, 4–6 in another. Each range you add becomes its own PDF. This is the right choice when you already know which pages you need: pulling a signature page out of a contract, or separating a report's sections.

Every N Pages

Set a fixed number of pages per file, and CurePDF divides the whole document into equal chunks automatically — the last file may have fewer pages if the total doesn't divide evenly. Useful for breaking a long document into consistent pieces without figuring out ranges by hand.

Every Page Individually

Turns every page into its own separate PDF file in one step. Useful when you need each page as a standalone document, for archiving or feeding into another tool one page at a time.

By Chapters (Bookmarks)

If your PDF already has a table of contents, CurePDF can use its existing bookmarks to split it into one file per chapter automatically — no need to look up page numbers yourself. Works well for reports, ebooks, and manuals; scanned documents usually don't have bookmarks to begin with.

By Text (Content Match)

Enter a word or phrase that marks the start of a new document — like "Invoice #" or an account number label — and CurePDF splits the file every time that text appears on a page. Ideal for un-batching a scanned stack of similar documents, like many invoices or statements saved as one PDF.

Not Sure Which Pages You Need?

If you don't already know the exact page numbers, open your PDF in your browser or PDF reader first and note down which pages you want — most readers show page numbers in the toolbar as you scroll. Custom Ranges uses those same page numbers, counted from page 1, so whatever you see in your reader is what you enter here.

When You'd Split a PDF

Split PDF on Mobile

CurePDF's splitter works in your phone's browser the same way it does on desktop — Chrome, Safari, or any modern mobile browser on Android or iPhone/iPad. No separate app.

Is It Safe to Split a PDF Online?

Files at or under 25MB are split entirely in your browser and never uploaded anywhere — the strongest privacy position CurePDF can offer, since your file simply never leaves your device. Larger files, up to the 100MB limit, are processed on our server; per CurePDF's Privacy Policy, those are automatically deleted within 1 hour and their contents aren't reviewed or shared. Either way, avoid uploading documents with highly sensitive information unless you're comfortable with standard web-based processing.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I split a PDF?

Upload your file, choose custom ranges, every-N-pages, or every page individually, then click Split. You'll get a ZIP of the resulting files.

Can I split a PDF online for free?

Yes — with no account required and no daily limit on how many PDFs you can split.

Can I extract specific pages from a PDF?

Yes — use Custom Ranges and enter the exact pages you want in each output file.

Does splitting a PDF affect quality?

No. Splitting copies existing pages into new files as-is; nothing is re-rendered or compressed.

Can I split a large PDF?

Yes, up to 100MB.

Is it safe to split a PDF online?

Files up to 25MB are split entirely in your browser and never uploaded. Larger files are processed on our server and automatically deleted within 1 hour per our Privacy Policy.

Can I split a PDF on my phone?

Yes, it works the same in a mobile browser as on desktop.

Can I split a password-protected PDF?

Not currently — encrypted PDFs aren't supported yet.

Can I split a PDF by chapters or bookmarks?

Yes — choose "By Chapters" and CurePDF will use the PDF's existing bookmarks (table of contents) to create one file per chapter. This only works for PDFs that already have bookmarks; if yours doesn't, use Custom Ranges instead.

Can I split a PDF wherever certain text appears?

Yes — choose "By Text" and enter a word or phrase, like "Invoice #". CurePDF starts a new file at every page containing it. This works best when that text appears once, near the top of each new document, rather than on every page.

What if my PDF only has one page?

There's nothing to split — you'll need at least 2 pages.

Can I choose which specific page becomes which file?

Yes, using Custom Ranges — each range you define becomes its own file, in the order you set.

What file do I get after splitting?

A ZIP file containing one PDF per range, chunk, or page, depending on the mode you chose.
