What Is a PDF Watermark?

A PDF watermark is text (or, on some tools, an image) placed over or under a document's content to label, brand, or mark its status. CurePDF's watermark tool adds text watermarks — stamps like "CONFIDENTIAL," "DRAFT," or a company name, styled and positioned however you choose. It doesn't currently support image or logo watermarks; if you need to place a logo image on your PDF, this isn't the right tool for that yet.

How to Add a Watermark to a PDF

Why Add a Watermark to a PDF?

Marking document status. Labeling a contract "DRAFT" before it's final, or a report "FOR REVIEW," makes it obvious the file isn't the finished version if it gets forwarded early.

Branding. Stamping a company name across a proposal or portfolio before sending it to a prospective client.

Confidentiality labeling. Marking HR documents, financial statements, or internal reports "CONFIDENTIAL" or "INTERNAL USE ONLY" as a visible reminder of how the document should be handled.

Ownership marking. Putting your name or organization on a document you're sharing for feedback or review, so it's clear where it came from.

Customizing Your Watermark

• Font, size, and color — six font options (Helvetica, Helvetica Bold, Times Roman, Times Bold, Courier, Courier Bold), any color, sized to fit your document.
• Opacity — a lighter watermark stays out of the way of the content underneath; a heavier one is impossible to miss.
• Rotation — angle the text however you like; a diagonal angle is the traditional look for "DRAFT" or "CONFIDENTIAL" stamps.
• Layering — place the watermark in front of your content, or behind it so the original text and images stay fully readable through a lighter watermark.

Where Should You Place a Watermark?

Watermark Best Practices

• Keep opacity low enough that the underlying text stays readable.
• Don't place a heavy watermark directly over a section someone needs to read closely, like a signature block or a table of figures.
• Use consistent wording and styling across a set of related documents so the status is recognizable at a glance.
• Preview your settings before applying — CurePDF's live preview shows font, color, opacity, rotation, and position as you adjust them.
• Match the label to the actual situation. A watermark that says "CONFIDENTIAL" on a document that isn't actually sensitive trains people to ignore the label when it matters.

Watermarking vs. PDF Security

A watermark and encryption solve different problems, and it's worth being clear about which one you actually need.

A watermark labels or brands a document. It's visible, and it makes the document's status or ownership obvious to anyone looking at it. It does not restrict who can open the file, copy its text, print it, or edit it — someone can still do all of those things to a watermarked PDF exactly as they could before.

If you need to actually restrict what someone can do with a file — require a password to open it, or prevent printing, copying, or editing — that's a different tool: Protect PDF applies real password protection and permission restrictions using encryption. Watermarking and password protection are often used together (watermark a draft, then password-protect it before sending), but they're not the same thing, and a watermark alone shouldn't be relied on as a security measure.

Watermark PDF Online vs. Desktop Software

An online tool is the faster option for a one-off document — no installation, works from any browser, and you're finished in about the time it'd take to open a desktop application. If you're watermarking PDFs constantly as part of a repeated workflow, desktop software built for that may offer more automation. For an occasional watermark, the browser is the quicker path.
